The small front-wheel drive coupe, which has been described by Krafcik as a “4-passenger Honda CR-X”, is scheduled to go on sale at Hyundai’s dealerships alongside the larger and more expensive rear-wheel drive Genesis Coupe before the end of 2011.

Krafcik has revealed that the production model, which may very well retain the Veloster nameplate, will be powered by a new 1.6-liter four cylinder engine with direct injection pushing out 140 hp. It is expected that the base model will return over 40 mpg US (5.8lt/100km or 48mpg UK).

There’s a strong possibility that Hyundai may also offer the Veloster with either a turbocharged variant of the 1.6L engine or the firm’s 2.0-liter GDI petrol that develops 198HP in the new Sonata. Europeans could also get a diesel version of the Veloster.

The Blue Edition, which is the new door-demolish smart genre priced at around $10,000, receives the same behavior as the other Accents plus revised transmission gear ratios and lowered traverse height for better fuel efficiency. Although no details were released on the powertrain options for the ix35 that will be built at sister company Kia’s Zilina plant in Slovakia, Hyundai said that the new model will deliver “markedly better” fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than rival SUVs and compete head on in terms of running costs with mainstream hatchbacks.

At launch, the KDM Tucson ix will be available with a choice of a 2.0-liter diesel or gasoline engines producing 184 horsepower and 166 horsepower respectively. Buyers will be able to opt between six-speed manual and automatic transmissions as well as front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions.

It is expected that the European-spec model will at some point be offered with a new 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing around 170 horsepower.

More detailed information about the ix35 will be released at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Hyundai car 2011

The Street Concepts coupe builds off the 3.8-liter V6 model, coating the exterior in a “Stealth Fighter-inspired” paint scheme and matching it to a custom grille, tinted head and tail lights and an APR wing. 19-inch Volk hoops wrapped in Pirelli rubber fill the wheel wells and frame uprated Brembo brakes. The only substantive engine mods are a K&N cold air intake and Magnaflow cat back exhaust. Inside, it’s more about show than go, with a pair of Recaro Sportster Topline seats, black suede accents and an Infinity audio system.

HKS received a turbocharged 2.0-liter model to build its masterpiece, and with a GT2835R turbo upgrade, HKS stainless tubular manifold, intercooler, sequential blow-off valve, carbon fiber air box and cat-back exhaust, the HKS Genesis is a good indication of what the first round of modded coupes could look like when it goes on sale this Spring. In addition to the engine upgrades, the suspension has been swapped out with HKS Hipermax III coilovers, along with a functional aero kit designed by Ken Style – HKS’s Time Attack partner.
