The deals to come out of this is that Toyota will be offering all customers free roadside assistance for all their cars along with 2 years of regular scheduled maintenance repairs. Starting in 2011, this will be a package that is included with all Toyota cars with no end date in the near future. Because branding is a long process that takes a really long time to embed in people’s mind, Toyota plans to make this program permanent. Obviously, fuel economy is the big change when thinking about switching to an electric hybrid.  Most hybrids today use an electric motor for low speeds and a gas engine for high speed driving and continuously switch back and fourth.  Doing this they can get 30 to 40 miles per gallon, which is a great improvement from the 15 mpg I get in my Lincoln Navigator.  The Chevy Volt is slightly different in that it uses the battery and electric motor for trips of 40 miles or less without ever starting the gas engine.  When the gas engine starts it runs a generator which recharges the batteries and keeps the car going for long trips.  The EPA has not rated the Volt’s gas mileage yet but I have seen estimates that are over 150 mpg for trips of less than 40 miles, then coming down to the mid 30′s for long trips when the engine is running.  The Nissan Leaf has an EPA mileage rating of 99 MPGe.  That combines both city and highway driving.  The big difference between the Leaf and the Volt is that the Leaf does not have a gas engine at all.  It is purely an electric car.  It has a range of 78 miles, then needs a 7 hour charge.   

Another benefit of driving hybrid electric cars and SUVs is that they are environmentally friendly. These vehicles do not produce the same amount of carbon dioxide emissions or noise pollution as their gasoline-only counterparts, which of course reduces their negative impact on the environment. The green movement is very popular in society today, as well it should be. Now there’s a way for all of us to drive without having to feel guilty about what we’re doing to air quality. I don’t know about you, but I definitely prefer driving to depending on inconsistent bus or train service! 

The government is making it easier choose a new hybrid car or all electric car.  They provide tax incentives in the form of tax credits.  Tax credits are the best because you deduct them from your normal tax bill at the end of the year.  they are changing all the time, but as I write this you can get $3,000 back for buying a Mazda Tribute or Ford Escape.  You can get $3,400 back if you buy a Mercury Milan or Ford Fusion.  Check with your dealer to see what is available in your area. 

OK, I have just about convinced myself.  I have some concerns because this is very new automotive technology and the prices are a little high.  A lot of that is easy to over come because of the tax incentives and great long term warranties most of these cars have.  Also, I can expect to save a lot money I normally spend for gas.  I also expect the maintenance costs to be lower than they are for a conventional car.  Now I just have to choose which hybrid electric car I want.
